How long have you been a teacher?
-I started teaching in Fairfax County in 1973; however, I took a long break to raise a family. So in total I’ve taught for 22 years.
What is your favorite lesson of the year?
-My favorite lessons are those that engage my students and encourage active creative thinking and learning.
What do you like most about your school?
-There are so many things I love about Providence. First, the children are so eager to learn and help within our school community. Our sixth grade students take such pride in mentoring their younger peers. Our school community fosters parent involvement in their child’s education. We have a very active PTA that works with teachers to provide fun activities and lasting memories for all the students. Lastly, but certainly most importantly is our supportive staff. The moment you enter Providence the front office provides a genuine welcome. I’m very fortunate to have fantastic coworkers who love the kids and love to laugh. Our librarian is the best! She creates many opportunities to encourage our students to become avid lifelong readers.. Our administration inspires teachers like me with their passion for preparing each child for their future.
Why do you like this grade (best thing about this age of students)
-I love teaching sixth grade because I enjoy watching my students’ personalities develop as they grow cognitively. They can be so passionate about their ideas just like budding lawyers! I also appreciate their sense of humor and find myself laughing with them daily.
One tip for parents:
Take time to talk and really listen to your child. Ask their opinion on topics as this makes them feel valued. Try to eat dinner together.
