Toby Sorensen Named Vice Chairman
The City of Fairfax School Board unanimously named Carolyn Pitches as Chairman at their first regular school board meeting of the 2018-2019 school year last night, voting 4-0. Jon Buttram was not in attendance at the meeting.
Carolyn Pitches is serving her fifth term as a Fairfax City School Board member. She has served as Vice Chair of the Fairfax City School Board for four years and was the Fairfax City Schools’ representative to the Washington Area Boards of Education.
Ms. Pitches received her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education K-8 in 1992 from Virginia Tech and her Master’s degree in Education K-12 in 2002 from George Mason University. For nearly a decade, Mrs. Pitches taught 6th and 8th grade math in the Prince William County Public Schools. For the last ten years, she has been a teacher at Flint Hill School, where she is the Math Specialist for grades 3-4.
In 1997 and 1999, Mrs. Pitches was awarded the Teacher of Excellence Award for Prince William County Public Schools. She also served as co-chair on two Prince William County Public Schools committees: The Substance Abuse Committee (Core Team) and the At Risk Committee, where she planned, designed and wrote grants to provide a program for students in need of additional support.
Ms. Pitches and her husband Justen have lived in the City of Fairfax since 1999. They have two daughters who attend Fairfax City Schools, where she has volunteered and PTA member.
