School Board Chairman Carolyn Pitches began the regular school board meeting on Monday, December 3 with an unusual agenda item. The 30-member Bella Canzone chorus from Lanier Middle School opened the meeting with a song. The chorus was to be recognized for their selection to perform at the Virginia Music Educators Association conference in November. After their song, the students received certificates and accolades from the City School Board.
In addition to the chorus, staff members from Providence ES and Daniels Run ES were recognized for their excellent work. Additional Lanier students received praise for their efforts in wind technology and environmental advocacy.
The majority of the students recognized in the evening were from Fairfax High School and Fairfax Academy for Communications and the Arts. Students received certificates for awards such as All State Orchestra/Chorus, National Merit, Gold/Silver medals in Latin and French, DECA state winners, FCCLA national winners, Science Olympiad and golf district champions.
“This is truly one of our favorite evenings to recognize our students and staff,” said Dr. Phyllis Pajardo, Superintendent of the City of Fairfax Schools.
