Daniels Run ES teachers tour the Potomac on October 8.

Fifteen Daniels Run Elementary School (DRES) teachers embarked on a new type of staff development training – on a boat touring the Potomac Bay. Created to show teachers why the DRES environmental program makes a difference for the Bay and importance hands on education.

Daniels Run ES is a twelve year VA Naturally School and a National Wildlife Federation Eco-Schools USA Green Flag Award School and dedicated to providing environmental education beyond the classroom.

The teachers were treated to a five hour,¬†on-the-water view of the nation’s capital and its connection to the Chesapeake Bay watershed. With hands-on activities the teachers became the students and saw first hand why their lessons about the environment have a direct impact to the area where they live.

The tour was part of an Innovation Grant provided by the City of Fairfax Schools. The grants, given to each of the four city schools and the Academy, are designed to support teachers to increase innovation within their schools and classrooms.
