Name: Karen James
School: Providence Elementary School
Grade/Subject: Third Grade; General Education
How long have you been a teacher?
This is my 11th year.
What is your favorite lesson of the year?
I have two lessons that I look forward to teaching each year. The first is teaching students to infer because they will have to begin to draw conclusions in their reading during third grade. The other is teaching place value. It is the first unit in math for third grade and so important to the conceptual understanding of future units.
What do you like most about your school?
I would have to say that the opportunities and professional development that are provided to the staff are phenomenal. Providence Elementary keeps up with the changing face of education. I also love the community of the school, especially the diversity among the student population. Our staff is exceptional and has the best interests of the students at heart.
Why do you like this grade (best thing about this age of students):
Third grade is a transition year. There is a lot more student responsibility expected. It is truly wonderful to watch the students grow and change throughout the year!
One tip for parents:
Talk to your child about their day! The more you and your child talk about what he or she is learning at school, the more you can support them in their learning at home and school. Read with your child every night too!
5 Quick Q&A
Favorite book? I enjoy reading mysteries. I love to try to analyze the details of the story.
College/University attended: Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania
If you could be another profession, what would it be?
I would love to be a master gardener! I love to be outdoors and I am always in awe of how a tiny seed can grow into a magnificent plant!
Favorite place to travel?
That’s hard to say. I have travelled to 49 of 50 states in our country. There are many places in this country that I would like to visit again. I would especially like to return to the west and continue to travel around that part of the country. I especially would like to go back to the Grand Canyon and Yellow Stone National Parks. My family and I spent a lot of time in the west. We have some great family memories! I also took my first international trip to Argentina to see my son this past spring. I think I would like to continue to travel to other international destinations starting with family roots in England, Germany and Italy.
Favorite thing to do on weekends?
I like to relax and be outside. Most notably I enjoy going to Lake Anna and spending time there on the weekends!
