The City of Fairfax School Board is committed to increasing the academic achievement of all of our students, strengthening the climate in which student learning takes place, and expanding our faculty’s professional learning communities to further enhance learning and achievement.
To ensure that the Roadmap accomplished all of the goals that Stepp and his team intended, he and Dr. Mulvaney created the K-12 Task Force, a group of 24 parents, teachers, City School principals and other administrators.
The mission was to develop a document that provides information to parents regarding the curriculum from kindergarten to 12th grade. The task force met once a month, and at each session the group heard a presentation from one of the FCPS curriculum teams — math, English, social studies, science and foreign language. After months of discussion, the Road Map was ready.
“The key to student success lies in parents knowing what all the options are for their children,” Dr. Mulvaney explains. “We aren’t advocating pushing students beyond what they can handle — emotionally or academically — but it is amazing to see what they can do given the chance.”
FHS’ Carole Kihm adds that the Road Map isn’t only for college-bound students.
“It’s also for our students joining the workforce after graduation — for they may eventually decide to attend college, technical programs or apprenticeships and we want them to be ready for that day. By taking high-level classes now, they will have more doors open to them in the future.”
From a parent’s point of view
“I have been involved in the PTA for seven years and very involved in the City Schools — but this information was news to me,” says Fairfax City mom Marbea Tammaro, a member of the K-12 Task Force. “Too often, parents are in the dark — partly because we don’t ask the right questions. I believe the information on the Road Map will help us better guide our kids.”
