Jane Dull – Daniels Run Elementary School

Name  Jane Dull

School  Daniels Run Elementary

Grade/Subject  3rd grade

How long have you been a teacher? This is my 16th year.

What is your favorite lesson of the year?  Our school is beginning to implement Guided Math for our students. It has taken some trials and errors to see what “works” for my students and also fits my style of teaching.  I think we are off to a great start and will continue to change as we go.  It’s perfect for differentiating and meeting each student exactly where they are in math.

What do you like most about your school? It is much like a family.  Everyone is friendly and caring.  It is amazing the support you get from the whole staff, professionally and personally.

Why do you like this grade (best thing about this age of students) This is the best age to teach! Eight and nine year olds have learned some independence but still rely on adults for support and approval. They really want to please their teacher. I get pictures and notes almost every day telling me I am the best teacher in the whole world.  How can you top that!

School: Daniels Run Elementary School

Grade/Subject: 6th Grade

How long have you been a teacher? This is my third year teaching 6th grade. I also spent one year teaching English as a Foreign Language in Greece from 2010-2011.

What is your favorite lesson of the year? I love getting into the interesting facts about the Civil War. I am a huge Civil War buff and truly enjoy passing that interest onto my students. It all really connects for the students during our annual field trip to Gettysburg Battle Field in Pennsylvania. It is incredible watching their reactions as they learn more about the Civil War on ground where it actually happened.

What do you like most about your school? I love the people at Daniels Run more than anything. The students who come here every day make this a great place to work. The staff here is also top notch. I can’t imagine a better group of colleagues to spend my time with. It is such a supportive environment full of caring individuals.

Why do you like this grade (best thing about this age of students). When I started teaching sixth grade I was wonderfully surprised to be greeting by students with an eagerness to learn. These students are at such a crucial time in their lives both developmentally and educationally. I consider myself lucky enough to be a part of this time in their lives.

One tip for parents: Find one thing that interests your child that you can get into too. Having something in common to talk about or enjoy together is a great way to build a strong relationship.

School: Daniels Run Elementary School

Grade/Subject:  1st Grade

How long have you been a teacher? This is my 5th year teaching. I taught kindergarten for 3 years and this is my second year teaching 1st grade.

What is your favorite lesson of the year? I love everything I teach! It’s so much fun to see what topics interest students more. I enjoy Morning Meeting the most because it’s a great way to hear stories from students about their lives outside of school and to see the connections other students make to them.

What do you like most about your school? The collaboration we all have as teachers. Whether it’s through my wonderful team to look at ways to teach a certain topic to making connections with other grades and teachers. We truly are a big family here and it’s exciting to celebrate everyone’s life inside and outside of school. Daniels Run’s staff really knows how to support each other.

Why do you like this grade (best thing about this age of students): First grade is fun because you see them discover something new every day. It could be something that you teach them directly or something that they observe during a lesson. You can see their eyes light up with excitement and they are so ready to share what they have learned.

One tip for parents: Don’t forget to have fun with your child. They are only a kid once and you can form such a strong relationship by just talking or playing with them. These are also the activities that your child will remember and cherish the most.

What is your favorite lesson of the year? I loved teaching our ‘media message’ unit in writing last year. The students were so engaged and put forth a lot of effort and creativity in creating advertisements and commercials about what it means to have and show respect. It took more than just academic skills for these projects to come together. The kids worked well together throughout the process of planning, scripting, practicing, and producing.

What do you like most about your school? The community feeling here at Daniels Run is warm and welcoming. Parents and teachers work as a team. All staff work together and focus on educating and motivating our students to work hard and have grit!

Why do you like this grade (best thing about this age of students) 4th graders are a fun group to work with. They are curious and many of them have a great sense of humor! I like this age group because they enjoy working with other classmates, and some of the best learning comes from their collaborative work.
