Chelsea Large – Daniels Run Elementary School

Name: Chelsea Large

School: Daniels Run Elementary School

Grade/Subject: 6th Grade

How long have you been a teacher? This is my third year teaching 6th grade. I also spent one year teaching English as a Foreign Language in Greece from 2010-2011.

What is your favorite lesson of the year? I love getting into the interesting facts about the Civil War. I am a huge Civil War buff and truly enjoy passing that interest onto my students. It all really connects for the students during our annual field trip to Gettysburg Battle Field in Pennsylvania. It is incredible watching their reactions as they learn more about the Civil War on ground where it actually happened.

What do you like most about your school? I love the people at Daniels Run more than anything. The students who come here every day make this a great place to work. The staff here is also top notch. I can’t imagine a better group of colleagues to spend my time with. It is such a supportive environment full of caring individuals.

Why do you like this grade (best thing about this age of students). When I started teaching sixth grade I was wonderfully surprised to be greeting by students with an eagerness to learn. These students are at such a crucial time in their lives both developmentally and educationally. I consider myself lucky enough to be a part of this time in their lives.

One tip for parents: Find one thing that interests your child that you can get into too. Having something in common to talk about or enjoy together is a great way to build a strong relationship.

How long have you been a teacher? This is my 5th year teaching. I taught kindergarten for 3 years and this is my second year teaching 1st grade.

What is your favorite lesson of the year? I love everything I teach! It’s so much fun to see what topics interest students more. I enjoy Morning Meeting the most because it’s a great way to hear stories from students about their lives outside of school and to see the connections other students make to them.

What do you like most about your school? The collaboration we all have as teachers. Whether it’s through my wonderful team to look at ways to teach a certain topic to making connections with other grades and teachers. We truly are a big family here and it’s exciting to celebrate everyone’s life inside and outside of school. Daniels Run’s staff really knows how to support each other.

Why do you like this grade (best thing about this age of students): First grade is fun because you see them discover something new every day. It could be something that you teach them directly or something that they observe during a lesson. You can see their eyes light up with excitement and they are so ready to share what they have learned.

One tip for parents: Don’t forget to have fun with your child. They are only a kid once and you can form such a strong relationship by just talking or playing with them. These are also the activities that your child will remember and cherish the most.

Grade/Subject: 4th Grade

How long have you been a teacher? This is my third year teaching, all three years spent at Daniels Run.

What is your favorite lesson of the year? I loved teaching our ‘media message’ unit in writing last year. The students were so engaged and put forth a lot of effort and creativity in creating advertisements and commercials about what it means to have and show respect. It took more than just academic skills for these projects to come together. The kids worked well together throughout the process of planning, scripting, practicing, and producing.

What do you like most about your school? The community feeling here at Daniels Run is warm and welcoming. Parents and teachers work as a team. All staff work together and focus on educating and motivating our students to work hard and have grit!

Why do you like this grade (best thing about this age of students) 4th graders are a fun group to work with. They are curious and many of them have a great sense of humor! I like this age group because they enjoy working with other classmates, and some of the best learning comes from their collaborative work.

One tip for parents: Read with your child. Whether you are reading to them or having them read to you, reading is a great time to bond and encourages a passion for reading.

Grade/Subject:  2nd Grade Teacher

How long have you been a teacher? This is my third year teaching. I have taught second grade at DRES all three years.

What is your favorite lesson of the year? When we get the Monarch butterfly larva. It is such an amazing experience for the kids to see the larva grow and go through all of their stages. The students get to apply everything they have learned throughout the year in science and it provides a hands-on experience which is great for all learners! It is fun to name each larva, feed them, and then release them into the wild when they have completed their transformation into a butterfly!

What do you like most about your school? I think I truly have the most amazing school out there. Our administrative staff acts as if each and every student is their own. They are extremely good at what they do and are nothing but supportive to their teachers. Daniels Run has great resources and amazing resource teachers to support those programs. I really enjoy our science lab and how ecofriendly our school is. I also love how friendly and supportive the staff members are to each other, it is like one giant family!

Why do you like this grade (best thing about this age of students) I absolutely love the age students are in second grade. It is amazing what an impact you can have on them as learners. I love that I can help to shape them both socially and academically and that I can truly make a difference in how they view school and learning!

One tip for parents: Ask your child what they learned each day. Take the time to read with them each night and make them feel valued. Stress the fact that “I can’t” should not be part of their vocabulary. Each child is capable of doing anything they put their mind to!

Helai Mahfus – Daniels Run Elementary School

Name – Helai Mahfus

School – Daniels Run ES

Grade/Subject – Second Grade/General Ed./Classroom Teacher

How long have you been a teacher? 3 years

What is your favorite lesson of the year? I have so many! One of my absolute favorites is a science lesson about changing matter, in which we make play dough. The kids have to work together to make observations about the various ingredients provided, make predictions about what will happen when they put it all together, and then they actually get to mix it to create the dough! This then lends itself to a discussion/further exploration of the different types of matter and how matter can undergo different kinds of changes.

What do you like most about your school? We are all firmly committed to the notion of “teamwork” and support and believe in each other.

Why do you like this grade (best thing about this age of students) Second graders are sensational! They are eager, optimistic, and it’s wonderful being able to support them as they begin to develop even more of their individual identity. Plus they are just adorable! They constantly make me smile.

One tip for parents: Read with your kids as much as you can! Read to them, have them listen to you read, take turns reading together, share your thinking as you read, and ask each other questions! It’s a great habit to start that will undoubtedly lead to valuable, lifelong skills.
