City of Fairfax Schools Superintendent Proposes FY 2025 Budget

City of Fairfax Schools superintendent Jeff Platenberg presented his $63.5 million FY 2025 budget to the City of Fairfax School Board at the regular school board meeting on Monday, December 4, 2023. To see Mr. Platenberg’s presentation, please visit the City of Fairfax meeting page and watch the December 2023 regular school board meeting.

The main drivers of the Fairfax city school budget are city student average daily membership (ADM) projections and Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) operating costs. The City of Fairfax pays FCPS a tuition fee based on the number of city students and a percentage of the FCPS operating costs. The largest section of the budget will be a $58 million payment for the projected 2734 city students to FCPS through the School Services Agreement. The City of Fairfax also pays a percentage of the FCPS operating costs. In 2023, the operating expenses for FCPS were approximately $3.496 billion.

The FY 2025 proposed budget also includes $300,000 in supplemental instructional funds to the City schools that assist with student support such as summer programming, transition programs for students attending a new school, professional development, and National Board Certification tuition reimbursement for teachers.
