About Us
The City of Fairfax Schools district stands out as a unique model in Virginia. With the strong support of the Fairfax City community and the comprehensive programs offered through a partnership with Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)—one of the nation’s largest school systems—the district benefits from the best of both worlds.
Established in 1962, the partnership between the City of Fairfax and FCPS, known as the School Services Agreement (SSA), is one of the only partnerships in the state between school districts. Through the SSA, FCPS handles curriculum, staffing, and transportation, while the City of Fairfax manages the four city-owned school buildings, including overseeing major renovations, capital improvements, and managing the SSA.
The City of Fairfax School Board, composed of five members elected every two years, meets twice monthly during the school year for regular board meetings and work sessions. If you are a city resident, the city school board is your representative and your advocate to FCPS. The Board and superintendent together administer a $60 million budget allocated to FCPS as tuition payments, capital improvements, and additional support for the schools.
